Join us and celebrate World No Tobacco Day on May 31 and live smoke-free!
World No Tobacco Day is observed worldwide every year on 31 May, and the theme for the 2023 event is "Grow food, not tobacco." This campaign aims to raise awareness about how tobacco growing contributes to the global food crisis.
Despite all the health risks and diseases associated with smoking, many people find quitting it difficult. Quitting smoking is indeed easier said than done. Nicotine dependence is a chronic disease, and most smokers need to make multiple attempts to quit successfully. In fact, more than half of all smokers need to try at least twice before kicking the habit for good.
This month, we will discuss the dangers of smoking and provide some tips on quitting smoking successfully. Read on to find out how you can protect your health and the health of your loved ones by staying away from tobacco.
What's in a cigarette and harms of cigarette smoking:
When burned, cigarettes create more than 7,000 chemicals, including over 70 carcinogens. The three main chemicals most impacting the body are nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide.
⬤ Carbon monoxide can interfere with oxygen delivery to the body's organs and accelerate aging.
⬤ Nicotine is addictive and the main psychoactive substance in tobacco that affects the brain and nervous system.
⬤ Tar not only stains smokers' fingers and teeth but also forms a sticky layer inside the lungs, blocks the airways, accelerates lung aging, and cause function decline.
Studies have shown that smoking can lead to various fatal diseases and cancers, including:
✓ Cancers: lung, oropharyngeal, laryngeal, esophageal, gastric, liver, pancreatic, renal, bladder, cervical, leukemia, and colon cancers.
✓ Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases: coronary heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease.
✓ Respiratory diseases: pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, tuberculosis, cough, and excess mucus production.
✓ Eye diseases: blindness, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.
✓ Pregnancy-related diseases: ectopic pregnancy, fetal growth restriction, cleft lip and palate, preterm birth, miscarriage, and other pregnancy complications.
✓ Other diseases: impotence, infertility, osteoporosis, peptic ulcers, periodontal disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis.
Set achievable goals. Don't say "I will never smoke again," but "Today is the day I quit smoking." And the next day, tell yourself, "I did my best yesterday, so I will continue to work hard today" -- take it one day at a time. Enjoy the benefits of a smoke-free life while keeping pace to achieve your goal. Good luck conquering the challenge!
